Jeff Taylor and his wife Amy are moving to California, and decide to ride across the country. After the car breaks down in the desert, Amy accepts a ride from passing trucker Red to get help. After hours she hasn't returned, and Jeff makes his own way to the nearby diner she was heading for. Nobody there has seen her - not even the trucker who picked her up.

Accompanied by his pet chimpanzee, a celebrity animal trainer picks up a hitchhiker, only to discover his passenger is a cunning young serial killer.
