In 1940, with a German invasion looming, the defence of Walmington-on-Sea is in the hands of local bank manager Captain Mainwaring and a motley collection of volunteers. After a series of blunders, the Home Guard finally get the glory they deserve.

Newton Davis builds a dream home for his childhood sweetheart and is promptly dumped. Devastated, he seeks solace in the arms of a waitress, but sneaks off into the night once he's had his fun.
